Northern Ontario Bioenergy Tour 2014
Opportunities for Ontario and Nordic Alliances

November 4 to 8, 2014

The Biomass Innovation Centre in partnership with RDÉE Ontario Alliances organized and led a delegation of Finnish, Swedish and Canadian biomass experts on a visit and study tour throughout northern Ontario – including stops in Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, Marathon, Red Rock and Thunder Bay.

This delegation was comprised of industry leaders, consultants, academia and researchers, forestry equipment providers, biomass boiler/CHP manufactures and government – each with several years of biomass expertise in their native countries and with major interests in seeking opportunities within Ontario. The purpose of this tour was to explore potential project and business alliances between our northern Ontario communities/businesses and with the members of this delegation.

In each of the corresponding stops on the tour we held mini-workshops and B2B meetings with community leaders, regional economic developers, equipment manufacturers, forest harvesters, SFL holders, industry, academia/researchers and First Nations.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who made this trip such a tremendous success, including our delegation members, event organizers, speakers, workshop participants, food/accommodations providers and regional partners!

Our Delegation

In addition BIC (2) and RDÉE Ontario Alliances staff (1), our delegation consisted of individuals from Finland (15), Sweden (2) and Canada (4). The vast expertise on this tour represented consulting and logistics, bioenergy systems, forest harvesting equipment, research and academia, and industry associations.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry hosted the first of several information sessions on this tour, focusing on Ontario’s forest management planning and the province’s growing forest bioeconomy. The purpose of this session was to provide the delegation with a policy and market overview as it relates to biomass development in Ontario.

Following this session the delegation participated in the Energy Opportunities Conference in Sault Ste. Marie from November 4-6, many of whom were speakers at the conference. The time in Sault Ste. Marie was also occupied with pre-arranged B2B meetings with local groups, and with several tours of local facilities including the Terrafact Canada photogrammetry lab, Flakeboard composite panel production facility, Ellsin Environmental tire recycling facility, Francis H. Clergue Hydroelectric Generating Station, Prince Wind Generating Farm, and Heliene photovoltaic module solar manufacturing plant.

Wawa - Workshop and B2B Meetings

Following our departure from Sault Ste. Marie we then began the tour portion of our trip. Our first stop was a mini-workshop in the township of Wawa, organized in partnership with the Economic Development Corporation of Wawa. This session was attended by individuals from the Wawa and surrounding area including a mix of economic developers, city officials, provincial government, forest professionals and First Nations.

The session opened with a welcome smudging ceremony from Michipicoten First Nation, followed by presentations and ending with time for B2B meetings.

Following this day’s session and tours we celebrated the week’s success at the Finlandia Club & Hoito Restaurant, where we enjoyed Finnish cuisine while surrounded by photos and monuments telling stories of the extensive Finnish history in Thunder Bay. A special thank you goes out to the Thunder Bay Finnish-Canadian Historical Society for providing an insightful overview of the Finnish cultural and political life in northwestern Ontario.

The following morning marked the end of this successful tour; everyone went their separate ways to either return home or continue with their travels. This tour's end, however, marks the beginning of several potential collaborations between our northern Ontario communities and businesses and with the experts within this delegation.
